Technical Assistance for Operationalization of the Pilot Agricultural Waste Management Systems in the Prespa Lake Watershed
25.02.2013

The agricultural waste generated by apple farming in the Prespa Lake watershed has been identified as a serious threat to Lake’s natural ecosystem. Since 2008, with the aim of tackling the threat, the UNDP has been supporting the Municipality of Resen, Macedonia in assessing the feasibility of two pilot agriculture waste management systems (WMS): pesticide packaging WMS; and biodegradable WMS. Further on, with financing provided by the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency (SDC) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), establishment of the systems was concluded which involved major construction works.

Within the scope of the 3-year TA Program PointPro Consulting, as a leader of a wider team of local experts, will be providing substantive assistance to local WM authorities in Resen in operationalizing the two pilot systems and overcoming barriers to making the systems functional. Program activities include: (1) establishing optimal agriculture waste collection, transport and disposal; (2) introducing composting technology; (3) ensuring financial sustainability of the systems; and (4) cooperation and community awareness raising support.
